The "Upright" MRI or Standing MRI is a unique and brilliant
invention by fonar corporation that allows patients to
assume the position which creates the pain for their MRI
scan.  Most traditional MRI scans are performed with the
patient in the least painful position, ie. the position in which
the pathology may not be evident on MRI.  The positional
MRI is a completely open unit that is extremely quiet,
permits the patient to sit or stand for the scan, and usually
the patient watches TV across the room.  It accommodates
large patients due to the extra-heavy duty gantry, and
eliminates claustrophobia from the scan.  The quality of the
                                                      scans is astonishing.
                                                  With only a 0.6T magnet,
                                                  the quality exceeds that
                                                  of recumbent MRI units
                                                  and challenges that of
                                                  traditional closed units.
